- To learn about the prevalence of cardiovascular disease in the United States.
- To understand the basic pathophysiology of hypertension and ischemic heart disease.
- To review the oral effects caused by medications used to treat hypertension and ischemic heart disease.
- To identify the most common antiplatelet and anticoagulant medications used to treat ischemic heart disease and their effects upon dental treatment.
- To recognize the deleterious drug interactions between cardiovascular medications and those used during dental treatment.
- To review the use of local anesthetics with vasoconstrictors among cardiovascular patients.
- To understand dental treatment modifications and contraindications among cardiovascular patients.
- To list protocols and equipment necessary to treat medical emergencies arising during the dental treatment of cardiovascular patients.
